Snail infections

Studies of snails have been layered onto efforts related to gaining control of schistosomiasis and are also part of the project on elimination of schistosomiasis. These snail studies are being conducted in selected high-prevalence villages that are receiving the least intensive measures (school-based treatment MDA with two of four years being drug holidays) and the most intensive measures (annual community-wide treatment MDA). Data and specimens obtained will have multiple purposes, including:

  • Contributing to models that can be used to estimate force of transmission and, therefore, the likely response of  a community to MDA
  • Contributing to our understanding of and measurement of progress towards elimination of schistosomiasis
  • Providing samples (cercarial DNA) for studies of schistosome population genetics
  • Providing well-characterized snail samples that can be banked for future studies
