Bayer Donates 3MT of Niclosamide for Zanzibar Schistosomiasis Elimination Program

Bayer S.A.S. has donated 3MT of niclosamide to the Ministry of Health (MoH) Zanzibar. The molluscicide will be used on both Pemba and Unguja to support the SCORE Zanzibar Elimination Program. This generous donation was coordinated by the Bayer Environmental Science, Global Partnering / Vector Control division, and will go a long way towards the 12MT estimated to be required for reducing the freshwater intermediate snail hosts of schistosomes at transmission sites.

The niclosamide will be applied by the MoH snail control teams in 30 shehias (15 Unguja; 15 Pemba). The study is designed to investigate the benefits of using snail control alongside the National Control Program, which aims to deliver praziquantel twice a year to communities in the endemic areas.
